Area 060
location: North Gatehouse G1 entrance.
designation: Secondary gate.
description: The secondary entrance allows access to the inner bailey through a network of two short corridors and a center octagonal restraining room. There are two gates, one at either end, and both bound with iron bands and protected with iron studs. Two portcullises block the restraining room, which is faced with numerous arrow loops. Murder holes are constructed successively into the ceiling of the restraining room, allowing hot oil to be poured and cascade down onto intruders should the outer gate be breached.

description: This small octagonal tower contains an arrow loop which permits defensive fire into the restraining room, and a stone staircase (staircase M) that spirals ccw up to G2.

Area 065
location: North Gatehouse G2 chamber.
designation: Secondary gatehouse second story.
description: The gatehouse expands into a single large room. All four tower staircases open onto the floor, each spiraling up to G3 and down to G1. The gatehouse floor is covered with murder slots, and twin winches on the north end of the room raise the secondary drawbridge. A small number of bladed weapons and crossbows are kept here. Two fireplaces provide warmth and illumination for the room, and are sufficiently large to heat pots of oil. The room has two arrow loop alcoves, one to north and one to south.

Area 066
location: North Gatehouse G3 chamber.
designation: Secondary gatehouse third story.
description: The gatehouse third floor is comprised of a single large room. All four tower staircases open onto the floor, each spiraling up to G4 and down to G2. Two massive portcullis winches and a storage bin for catapult rocks dominate the room. The room has two arrow loop alcoves, one to north and one to south.

Area 067
location: North Gatehouse G4 roof.
designation: North gatehouse roof.
description: This is the crenellated top of the gatehouse. The crenellations are 4' in height. All four gatehouse tower staircases open onto the roof. The gatehouse roof stands approximately ten feet above the curtain walls. Two fireplace chimneys rise from the roof center. The center contains a container of catapult rocks for the three catapults that overlook the northern moat. The four staircases all spiral down to G3.
