Carlisle's Vision

     The late 1990's and early years of the new millenium showed
remarkable advances in human medical research. The dual sciences
of genetic manipulation and outright cloning eventually produced
two entirely new strains of human. 

     Human clones began appearing, legally and illegally, in
laboratories all over the world. Some of these were merely the
extension of scientific experimentation to see "if it could be
done" and some of them were actually created to be "body parts
banks" for the incredibly wealthy who had delusions of living
forever. Initially welcomed and protected by the populations of
Earth, the discovery that clones were subject to Genetic Pattern
Degradation (GPD) that rendered a small percentage of them
unstable both physically and mentally, caused concern in many
areas because the clones that were effected could turn violent
without warning or suddenly have massive physical failures and
die while conducting hazardous work. 

     Although GPD never affected more than 0.7 to 1.2 percent of
the original clone population, the instances of its occurrence
were newsmaking to say the least and the clones began to find
themselves in a very uncomfortable spotlight. The creation of a
simple, office-usable blood test to ascertain "Genetic
Authenticity" didn't help much, as personnel managers began
requiring the test of new applicants, screening out clones under
the guise of a safety measure. Clones began to find that the
world that had created them would not allow them to work and live
with the rights that protected their own creators. Unhireable and
unwanted, clones began to form small, poverty-stricken 'ghettos'
all their own, mankind's latest second-class citizen, and the
most ill-treated to date.

     The second new form of man began as an attempt at prenatal
disease control:  a serum injected into pregnant women to
eradicate genetic predispositions to disease. The initial
attempts were successful and successive attempts eventually
worked on a grander scale, an attempt at true eugenics, the
creation of an improved human, stronger, healthier, smarter and
immune to most all physical infirmity. Knowing the unpopularity
of such an idea, the scientists involved decided to conduct one
large controlled experiment on the last serum, injecting 500
women and withholding the serum until the infants produced had
matured and the outcomes could be evaluated.

     They succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Not only were
the children of these women everything they had hoped for
physically and mentally, but genetically as well. The genes of
these children were totally dominant over regular human genes, so
that even if one of them married a baseline human, the progeny
would be an enhanced human as well. But human they were, even
if enhanced, and no one could control morality through genetics.
And the fall of man stems from this oversight.

     In 2026, an enhanced human named David Carlisle came to
discover that his true nature was not something that had occurred
naturally. He carried on a private investigation and discovered
the entire truth:  that some 1200 enhanced humans were living
among the population of the United States and that their numbers
would only grow. But David had always liked being special, and he
didn't want to share his uniqueness with "the non-gifted rabble"
of humanity. So he stole the records of the other enhanced
humans, destroyed the scientific notes on the serum, and
systematically killed the scientists involved, so that there
would never be more than the original 500 bloodlines of enhanced
humans. He then anonymously contacted the other enhanced humans
and attempted to bring them into his next plan; a plan to sieze
power on the island of Madagascar and set up a new nation
composed exclusively of enhanced humans.

     Not surprisingly, the enhanced humans were some of the
wealthiest, most powerful and influential men and women in the
United States, the least ambitious of them being sports giants
and Olympic Medalists. The largest majority of them turned
Carlisle down immediately, deciding that the long-term effects of
his actions could not be beneficial for them. Several did so in
terms derogatory and threatening. But Carlisle's actions achieved
one immediate side effect:  The enhanced humans now knew their
true nature.  And human arrogance began to work on some of them.
They joined Carlisle in Madagascar.

     Carlisle's plans had allowed for the possibility of
rejection. In his arrogance, Carlisle decided that the only thing
he had to fear was the interference of other enhanced humans, so
he immediately released the records of all enhanced humans who
had not joined with him to the international press. The results
were everything he hoped. Financial empires fell as human
paranoia about the unknown led them to fear and distrust the
enhanced humans and their businesses. Government agencies siezed
several of them covertly to discover the level of threat they
might represent. 

     Then came the final blows: Two incidents so inflammatory
that humans and enhanced humans were almost doomed to separation.
In the first, a famous and well-loved enhanced Olympic
Decathaloner named Adam Lewis was siezed by Scientific
Intelligence, a blanket operation for many other intelligence
bodies. SI experimented on Adam mercilessly, seeking to discover
the irregularities in his system and how to duplicate them. But
Adam escaped, injured, and made it to the offices of the New York
Times in an attempt to let other enhanced humans know what was
happening. The reporter at the Times wrote the story and the
story generated worldwide attention. SI, in an attempt to squelch
the story and discredit the reporter, arranged an 'accident' for
Adam. Adam Lewis died in a multi-car accident as they planned,
but security broke and his murder also made the news. Enhanced
humans went underground, using the last of their resources and
hiding as best they could. More joined with Carlisle on
Madagascar.

     The second incident involved one Deborah Osborne, an
enhanced hardware designer whose company had made major advances
in computer hardware that had revolutionized the industry.
Osborne had reasoned that what was needed was at least one public
figure, known to be enhanced, that didn't hide or succumb to dark
government conspiracies. She maintained her public image
carefully, showing everyone that she, and other enhanced humans,
had more in common with the general public than they had
differences. She dined out publicly with her human friends and
had never even met one of the other enhanced humans. Her stand
was to be her fall. One night, while leaving from a dinner at the
"21", she was accosted by a group of men later found to be
associated with the Ku Klux Klan, who harrassed her
unrelentingly.  Although she tried repeatedly to escape from
them, one of them finally resorted to pulling a knife. Then, in
front of dozens of witnesses, this rather normal looking woman
killed all four of these men in less than 15 seconds with her
bare hands, crushing the skulls of two of them, and breaking the
necks of the other three with incredibly fast, powerful blows.
Although she attempted to turn herself in to the authorities
immediately, a frightened policeman shot and killed her when she
approached him. 

     The storm became a gale and the gale a hurricane. The
enhanced humans all hid or joined Carlisle in Madagascar. But the
humans didn't know that.....they saw enhanced humans everywhere.
Riots and demands for the government to 'protect' them from these
supermen became the norm. 

     Meanwhile in Madagascar, David Carlisle was nearly ready to
make his move on the government and establish a new regime. He
had used enormous amounts of cash to buy influence and control,
and during the next election, he came to power in a landslide the
likes of which had never been seen before. His first official act
was to make a formal invitation to all clones everywhere to come
to Madagascar, where they would have a chance at work and
prosperity. The invitation was accepted happily, with both the
new government of Madagascar and several other governments around
the world willing to pay for the clones to be moved to
Madagascar. Carlisle then used his influence to remake the entire
government and economic standing of the country, bringing in
industries and technologies to build the monetary base to a level
never before seen in Madagascar. However, during the following
five years, he also made certain the Supreme Revolutionary
Council, Madagascar's primary decision making body was filled
with the enhanced humans who came to follow him. He also brought
nuclear power to Madagascar and used the plants for the next part
of is plan: building an independent nuclear arsenal.

     His next step was to break all existing ties with France.
France had been, for many years, supplying monetary aid to
Madagascar. No longer needed, Carlisle was quick to remind the
citizens that it had been France who maintained a brutal colonial
presence in Madagascar and had ruthlessly killed all those
seeking independence until the 1950's, stirring up hostile
feelings again.  When Madagascar's capitol building blew up,
Carlisle loudly proclaimed it was the work of the French
government, and swore retaliation. Most of the world chuckled.
Nobody chuckled when a 50 megaton blast rocked Paris 8 weeks
later, the first nuclear terrorist attack in history. But neither
was there any proof that Carlisle and the Madagascar Government
were to blame. Carlisle admitted nothing and would only state
that he was not surprised that somone might dislike the French.
The rest of the world looked at Madagascar as something new,
which, of course, it now was. Madagascar's Consulates and
Embassies began to get more official notice and reverential
treatment. And Madagascar's foreign service grew to the largest
it had ever been. As did its intelligence agencies, although no
one knew that yet. Carlisle was slowly infiltrating governments
with enhanced human agents all over the world. Smart, tough and
with good instincts and high technology, they were everywhere
they wanted to be. 

     And the Madagascar people loved Carlisle. He had brought new
money, new jobs and a sense of independence with him. He had
brought in the clones, true, but they were needed as well, since
the population really couldn't hande all the new jobs. And you
really couldn't tell a clone without the test. Who knew how many
there really were, anyway?

     That may have been about the time that David started the
penultimate phase of his plan:  the systematic replacement of
other government leaders with clones loyal to him. He knew that
the major governments were watching him closely since the attack
on Paris, so he thought it best to give them something to see. He
openly used his influence, money and political power to put
enhanced humans of African descent into leading positions in
neighboring Tanzania and Mozambique. And as he planned, the major
world powers saw that and thought they knew his mind. What they
didn't know was that important politicians in the U.S., England,
France, Russia and Israel were now clones of the originals, loyal
to Carlisle and willing to do almost anything he asked. Carlisle
bided his time, planned for the annihilation of the human race
and the eventual ascendency of the 500 bloodlines of enhanced
human. When the time was right, he would trigger wars on six
continents, destroy every major government in the world and he
and his would wait till the Earth cooled a little and then move
in to fill the vacuum. The clones all thought that Carlisle was
planning last minute interventions to stop the wars and make
himself even more important than he already was.

     And the plan was almost perfect. One clone distrusted
Carlisle and used his position to make sure that Carlisle would
never betray him and live. Senator Eric Neuhouse was not only one
of Carlisle's plants, but nothing less than a genius in his own
right. He arranged several nuclear war scenarios to be run at
NORAD that would include attacks from Madagascar, not a difficult
thing since the destruction of Paris. He made sure that several
nuclear MIRVs were pointed at Antananarivo, Madagascar's capitol
and Carlisle's personal hideaway. 

     Although a ruthless answer, it was an answer to the correct
question: On May 12, 2032, David Carlisle had agents around the
globe start the Last World War. From pre-programmed computer
"errors" to actual missile launchings, the scenario went
according to plan:

- Russians attacking the U.S. and China
- China attacking the Russians and the Japanese
- the U.S. attacking the Russians, Iraq, and North Korea
- the Israelis launching on several of their neighbors at once
- Islamic and non-Islamic Africans settling accounts with nuclear
  weapons supplied by Madagascar
- drug lords in South America discovering that the bombs they
  were using against government forces were actually nuclear and
  biological in content

     It was a nuclear, biological and chemical nightmare. And
right at the very beginning of this, 3 American 100-megaton MIRVs
ended all the hopes and dreams of David Carlisle. The devastation
was complete. Mankind had fallen at the hands of its own
intellectual creations. 

     If it hadn't been for the foresight of one gifted
man...........
