LAV-600 Recon Vehicle The hull and turret of the LAV-600 are of all-welded Cadloy armoured steel that provides protection from small arms fire and shell splinters. The driver sits towards the front of the vehicle to the rear of the first wheel station and has three forward-facing periscopes and a single-piece hatch cover hinged at the rear over his position. Between the first and second road wheel stations is a two-part door, the lower part with a firing port opens down to form a step, the upper part with a vision block, opens to the rear. The engine is to the right of the driver. It is coupled to a fully-automatic Detroit Diesel Allison transmission. The single-speed transfer case has a spline engagement clutch for the front axle. All axles are of the single reduction hypoid type with silent locking differentials. Suspension of the front axle is of the coil spring type while the rear axles have torsion bars. Steering is power assisted on the front axle only. The turret is identical to that installed on the Stingray Light Tank and full details will be given under turrets. At the rear of the hull are two large outward-opening doors, each of which has a firing port with a vision block above. These doors are used for ammunition resupply as the turret holds eight rounds, the remaining 28 rounds are carried in the hull.
