Area 001
location: Main Gatehouse G1 entrance.
designation: Main gate.
description: This is long corridor allows access to the inner bailey. There are two gates, one at either end, and both are bound with iron bands and protected with iron studs. Three portcullises are spaced within the corridor. It is a well-defended passage, faced with numerous arrow loops. Murder holes are constructed successively into the ceiling, allowing hot oil to be poured and cascade down onto intruders should the gate be breached.

location: Main Gatehouse G1 southeast tower chamber.

description: This is the main eastern defense room, containing three arrow loop alcoves facing into the entrance corridor and two arrow loop alcoves facing toward the drawbridge exterior. A stone staircase (staircase D) in the northeast corner spirals cw up to G2.

location: Main Gatehouse G2 center chamber.

description: This long rectangular room spans the length of the gatehouse, and connects the two front gatehouse towers. It contains four fireplaces which can heat pots of oil, and the three portcullises rest here when hoisted. Murder slots line the floor, and twin winches in the southern end of the room raise the main drawbridge. The room has only two arrow loop alcoves, one to north and one to south.

Area 009
location: Main Gatehouse G2 east tower.

description: Garrison troops often lounge here to escape the tight confines of their barracks. The room contains a small number of bladed weapons and crossbows, and has two arrow loop alcoves facing the south moat. A stone staircase (staircase D) in the northeast corner spirals cw up to G3 and ccw down to G1.

description: The gatehouse second floor connects to both staircase towers, and opens into a gallery that faces the inner bailey. The two stone staircases (staircases B and C) spiral cw up to G3 and ccw down to G1.

Area 012
location: Main Gatehouse G3 center chamber.
designation: Main Gatehouse third story.
description: This long rectangular room spans the length of the gatehouse, and connects all four gatehouse towers. The gatehouse is completely enclosed for the first time at this level, and the true shape of the gatehouse becomes clear. Two fireplaces heat the room, which is dominated by the three massive portcullis winches. The room has two arrow loop alcoves, one to north and one to south. The twin staircase towers open at the northern end of the room, both spiraling cw up to G4 and ccw down to G2. Unlike the other towers, the gatehouse has no access to the curtain walls.

description: This room contains round rock shot for the gatehouse catapults. Two arrow loop alcoves face the south moat. A stone staircase (staircase D) in the northeast corner spirals cw up to G3 and ccw down to G1.

description: This room contains weapons and limited supplies for the gatehouse garrison. Two arrow loop alcoves face the south moat. A stone staircase (staircase A) in the northwest corner spirals cw up to G3 and ccw down to G1.

Area 015
location: Main Gatehouse G4 roof.
designation: Main gatehouse roof.
description: This is the crenellated top of the gatehouse. The crenellations are 4' in height. All four gatehouse tower staircases open onto the roof. The gatehouse roof stands approximately ten feet above the curtain walls. Four fireplace chimneys rise in the roof center, and help support a central container of catapult rocks for the three catapults that overlook the south moat. The four staircases all spiral ccw down to G3.
